This well had been in service since 1970. It stopped pumping & motor winding impedance indicated an open. Got a new pump & proceeded to pull pump.
I assumed the well had a " standard " pitless" adapter. It had a 6 inch steel pipe protruding from the ground, about three feet down 3/4 inch pipe going to pressure tank. A 1.25 diameter pipe was screwed into fitting at bottom of 6 inch pipe about 4 feet down. Assumed you would pull & pitless adapter half would slide out. Put more force on pull than required, no movement. Concluded pump may be sanded in, thought given to using a different well 500 feet away.
After some thought, we removed dirt from 6 inch pipe to the bottom, noticed some clamping ring with 7/16 inch bolts (4). Removed them, & pulled up the six inch pipe & one inch black plastic appeared !! Pulled about hundred feet of it & pump was out.
Replaced pump in well and turned it on. It would cycle on and off at 7 second intervals. Removing cap from tee on top of well, pumped normally. Checked for plugged line going to pressure tank. No plug, just a stuck closed check valve the pressure meter was mounted on. Freed it & everything normal. I have worked on wells for a number of decades & had not experienced neither of these situations.
